The Problem: The “Resume” Trap
Most of us run for office because we have a servant’s heart. We want to be a voice for the families in our community who feel forgotten. But when voters visit our websites, do they see their own struggles, or do they just see a long list of our awards and endorsements?
I’ve spent 25+ years in creative media, and I’ve seen hundreds of campaign sites. Most of them are what I call “Digital Brochures.” They are full of text, endorsements, and “me, me, me.” But a campaign is a mission of service. If you spend all your time talking about yourself, the voter feels ignored.
The 5-Second Test
Can a voter instantly see:
● ” /> Exactly what you will fix for them?
● ” /> How their life gets better if you win?
● ” /> Exactly how to join your team?
● If they have to search for these, you are losing votes.
The Solution: Connect, Communicate, Call
The greatest leaders were the ones who put the people first. To truly connect, your message has to pass the “5-Second Test.” When a busy mom or a tired worker lands on your page, they shouldn’t have to hunt for your plan. They need to see your “Big 3” promises to fix their problems immediately.
“Can a voter tell what you’ll do for them in the time it takes to drink a sip of coffee?”
If your message is confusing, you aren’t just losing votes – you’re losing the chance to help people. To move the needle, you have to follow the 3 C’s:
● Connect: Show them you understand their pain. (The Heart)
● Communicate: Give them a clear, simple solution. (The Head)
● Call: Give them a way to join the fight. (The Hands)
When you simplify your message, you aren’t “dumbing it down” – you are being a better steward of the voter’s time and trust.
The Voter Connection Cheat Sheet
– 5 Things Every Voter Needs to See in 5 Seconds
Introduction: Voters don’t want a hero; they want a guide. They are the ones facing the “giants” of high costs, unsafe streets, and failing schools. Your job is to show them you have the stones and the sling to help them win.
The 5-Point Checklist:
1. The Hero Swap: Is your face the only thing people see? Change the headline from “About Me” to “About Your Family’s Future.”
2. Name the Giant: Clearly state the #1 problem you are going to solve (e.g., “Making our City Livable Again”).
3. The Simple Plan: Give them 3 clear bullet points. Don’t use “government-speak.” Use everyday words everyone understands.
4. The “Better Life” Picture: Show them what happens if you win. Use words like Safe, Affordable, Thriving.
5. The Clear Command: Tell them exactly what to do next. “Donate,” “Join,” or “Volunteer.” One button, one color, one goal.
